Is Mage Underpowered vs God Boss?

I heard that mage is useless against God boss. I'm a bit disappointed by this. I am advised to create an archer or holy knight. Is this true that mage is only useful to sed and pan?

Every character is useless against a god boss when alone. You will need to have a team and every character has to play a different role.

Yes, I look at Ice Storm and Fire Vortex skill, it can decrease attack of monster(reduce damage?). I think coupled with Holyknight's Reduce, it can make God boss tankable. Mage is useful after all.
